Despite it's poor opening weekend performance (number 3 at the box office behind Beverly Hills Chihuahua in it's second week at number one), this is actually a good movie. I was excited to work on the HBO TV special for this film. It is a 13 minute special that was played on HBO prior to the opening of the film as a way to get people out to the theaters.
In a sinking economy people tend to see comedies more often than dramas, likely in an attempt to escape the hardships brimming in their minds. This trend could explain the success of Beverly Hills Chihuahua (outside of the fact that kids movies always do well) where Body of Lies has failed. Even so I have a strong feeling that this film will find an audience in the coming weeks and build on that audience after it's international release. Considering the political nature of the film may also shed some light on it's underwhelming performance in the United States while simultaneously giving it hope in foreign countries.
Regardless of all that chatter, take a look at the HBO special that I edited.
